Urge Surfing Log for Habit Interruption
The client acts on impulses or cravings immediately without observing their natural rise and fall.
For the client trying to change a habit, the impulse itself often feels like a command. The craving arrives with an intensity that seems to demand immediate action, creating a tight loop between the urge and the unwanted behavior. This cycle can leave a client feeling that their own internal states are working against their goals.
This directive provides a structure for the client to observe an urge without obeying it. The objective is to witness the natural lifespan of a craving, its rise, peak, and eventual decline. The client gathers their own direct evidence that impulses are temporary and survivable, creating the space to make a different choice.
Urge Surfing Log for Habit Interruption
When you feel a strong urge to do something you want to change, pause. Instead of acting on it, take out this form. Note the date, time, and the situation that triggered the urge.
Rate the intensity of the urge on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the most intense you can imagine. Write this number down. Then, set a timer for 5 minutes. When the time is up, rate the urge’s intensity again. Reset the timer for 10 more minutes and rate the intensity a final time. Record all three ratings in the “Urge Intensity” column.
In the last column, write down what action you took.
| Date & Time | Trigger (What was happening?) | Urge Intensity (0-10) at Start / 5 min / 15 min | Action Taken |
