Somatic Inventory of a Single Emotion

Guides a client to map the specific physical sensations connected to a single emotional state.

When a client can name an emotion but can’t describe its physical presence, the feeling remains abstract and difficult to process. They might say “I’m angry,” but when asked what that feels like in their body, they are at a loss. This disconnect between the cognitive label and the somatic experience can stall progress, keeping the client stuck in intellectualization instead of integration.

This assessment gives the client a structured way to isolate and document the precise physical signature of a target emotion. It translates a generalized feeling into a set of distinct, observable sensations. The client leaves with a tangible, personal map of how that emotion shows up for them, creating a shared language for future work.

Somatic Inventory of a Single Emotion

Select one emotion you have experienced recently. Bring that feeling to mind now. As you hold the feeling, scan your body. Use the table below to record any physical sensations you notice. For each body area listed, describe the specific sensation and rate its intensity on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is very faint and 10 is very strong. If an area has no sensation, leave it blank.
