Practicing Active Listening Without Formulating a Response

This behavioral exercise trains a client to listen fully to another person without simultaneously.

Many clients struggle in conversation because they’re already composing their response while the other person is still speaking. This habit undermines connection, leading to misunderstandings and escalating conflicts, particularly in family or professional settings. The client often feels chronically unheard, without recognizing how their own listening pattern contributes to the dynamic.

This behavioral task is designed to interrupt that pattern by separating the act of listening from the act of formulating a reply. It directs the client’s full attention to the speaker, letting them practice receiving information without the internal pressure to prepare their turn. The client walks away with a concrete experience of what it feels like to listen with true presence.

Practicing Active Listening Without Formulating a Response

This week, conduct three separate conversations where your only goal is to listen.

Choose three different people for these conversations, which should be at least five minutes long. Do not choose a topic where you are in active conflict.

During the conversation, your entire focus must be on understanding what the other person is saying. Listen to their words, their tone, and the pace of their speech. Do not plan what you will say next. Do not think of a counter-argument, a related story, or a piece of advice.

If you find your mind preparing a response while they are still talking, stop. Mentally label the thought as “planning” and bring your attention back to the speaker.

When they have finished speaking, wait for a count of three before you respond. Let there be silence.

Begin your response by summarizing what you heard them say. Use a phrase like, “So, what you’re saying is…” or “It sounds like you felt…” Ask for confirmation that you understood correctly. Only offer your own thoughts after they have confirmed your understanding is accurate.
