Observation Task for Automatic Emotional Responses to Media

This task instructs a client to notice and log their unprompted emotional reactions to specific.

A client might report a general sense of unease or irritation without being able to pinpoint a cause. Often, this follows time spent with media, scrolling a feed, watching videos, or listening to the news. The emotional residue from this content can accumulate unnoticed, making it difficult for the client to connect their feelings to a specific source.

This observation task gives the client a simple framework for capturing their initial emotional reactions to content in real-time. It separates the gut feeling from the later story they might tell about it. The client returns to your session with a concrete log, creating a clear link between their media diet and their emotional state.

Observation Task for Automatic Emotional Responses to Media

For the next seven days, your task is to observe your automatic emotional responses to media. This includes social media feeds, news articles, television shows, movies, podcasts, and online videos.

When you notice a sudden shift in your emotional state while consuming media, pause. The goal is only to notice the reaction, not to analyze, judge, or change it.

Use the log below to record these moments as they happen. Write down what you were watching or reading, the first physical sensation you felt in your body, and the first word that came to your mind to name the emotion. Do not add interpretation. Record the observation and return to what you were doing.
