Rejection Inventory

Rejection Inventory

This directive is designed for clients whose self-concept is rigidly defined by what they are not. It is effective for individuals presenting with perfectionism, chronic procrastination, or an intense fear of failure. Often, the effort these clients spend avoiding a negative self-label becomes more constricting than the feared identity itself. This tool helps to surface the specific, often unarticulated, prohibitions that are at the core of the presenting problem.

The worksheet operates by externalizing these internal rules to examine their functional cost. It prompts the client to connect the identity they are resisting to the actual negative consequences of that resistance. This process creates a direct link between the client’s protective stance and its limiting outcomes, creating an opening for cognitive reappraisal and experimentation with more adaptive self-perceptions.
