Burnout Cascade Mapping

Client is burned out and attributes it to being busy, but the actual cascade is more specific: exhaustion triggers irritability, which damages relationships, which creates isolation, which deepens exhaustion.

Burnout is not one problem. It is a cascade. Each stage triggers the next. Exhaustion without support becomes despair. Despair makes it harder to take care of yourself. That worsens exhaustion. If the client can identify where in the cascade they are, they can interrupt it at the right point rather than trying to fix everything at once.

Mapping the cascade shows the path in.

Burnout Cascade Mapping

Burnout usually starts here and cascades:

Overextension: taking on too much without enough rest or support.

Exhaustion: your nervous system is spent. You cannot think clearly or regulate emotion.

Cynicism: you stop caring. Nothing seems worth the effort. You become irritable and withdrawn.

Damaged relationships: because you are irritable and withdrawn, people pull back. You feel alone in the work.

Isolation: without support, the work feels impossible. Your skills feel gone. You start to question your competence.

Deepening exhaustion: isolation triggers more exhaustion, and the cycle tightens.

Where are you in this cascade?

If you are at overextension: reduce the load. It is the only move that matters right now.

If you are at exhaustion: rest and support. Not later. Now. This is urgent.

If you are at cynicism: notice it. This is burnout telling you something real. Take it seriously.

If you are at isolation: reach out to one person. Tell them: I am burned out and I am struggling. Do not try to fix it. Just tell the truth.

The cascade can reverse. It starts with honest assessment of where you are and what stage needs the intervention.

Do not wait until you hit rock bottom. You are already struggling. Act now.
