Attribution Shift Exercise for Actor-Observer Bias

Client attributes their own mistakes to circumstance but interprets others' mistakes as character flaws, breeding resentment and distorted relationships.

The actor-observer bias is the tendency to blame external factors for our own behavior while blaming internal factors for others’ behavior. Your spouse is late because they are inconsiderate. You are late because traffic. This asymmetry creates conflict and prevents genuine understanding.

This exercise reverses the attribution and lets the client see the situation through a different lens.

Attribution Shift Exercise for Actor-Observer Bias

Think of a recent conflict with someone. Write down what they did that upset you. Write down your explanation for why they did it: what does this behavior say about them?

Now, imagine the same behavior happening to you. You did the same thing. What circumstances or pressures would explain your version of this behavior? Write them down.

Apply those same circumstances to the other person. Could your explanation also apply to them? What else might you not know about what was going on for them?

Do not use this to excuse their behavior. Use this to see it more clearly.

Repeat this with three recent interactions. Each time, ask: what was I assuming about their character? What circumstances could I be missing?

This is not about being a doormat. It is about moving from interpretation (they are selfish, inconsiderate, mean) to curiosity (I wonder what was actually going on for them). Curiosity opens the conversation. Interpretation closes it.

Pick one situation where you jumped to a character judgment. Ask the person: what was actually going on for you that day? Listen to the answer. You might learn something that changes the story completely.
