A Relationship Closure Narrative

Helps a client create a coherent story of a relationship's end to facilitate moving on.

For some clients, the end of a relationship leaves a chaotic collection of memories and unanswered questions. They may re-litigate old conflicts or remain tangled in the emotional details, unable to form a clear account of what happened. This lack of a cohesive story can keep them psychologically anchored to the past, preventing a sense of resolution.

This writing directive guides the client in assembling those fragmented pieces into a single, coherent personal history of the breakup. The goal is to externalize the experience and shape it into a finished narrative with a clear conclusion. The client walks away with a settled account of the event, which helps quiet the internal debate.

A Relationship Closure Narrative

Write the story of the relationship in three parts. Write in the past tense. Use a separate sheet of paper for each part.

Part 1: The Beginning Describe the circumstances when you met. What was happening in your life at that time? What were your first impressions of the person? What did you hope for? Write down the specific qualities or events that marked the start of the connection.

Part 2: The Middle Describe the established relationship. What were the recurring patterns of interaction? Detail one specific memory that represents the relationship at its best. Detail one specific memory that represents a significant point of conflict or disconnection. What changed between the beginning and this middle period?

Part 3: The End Describe the final phase. What events led to the ending? Report the actions and words used by both people. What was left unsaid or undone? Describe the final interaction. What reason, if any, was given for the relationship ending?

Once all three parts are written, read the entire story aloud from beginning to end without stopping. Do not edit or revise. Notice what it is like to hear the full account. Bring the written pages with you.
