15 Paradoxical Techniques for Clients Who Won't Cooperate
Includes 4 printable worksheets — free for registered members below.
Paradoxical intervention is the clinical tradition’s most misunderstood tool — described alternately as clever manipulation and as a last resort for cases that have run out of options. In Haley’s framework, the paradoxical intervention is neither. It is a precise clinical move based on an accurate structural analysis of why conventional directives fail.
When a symptom is embedded in a relational system, direct instructions to eliminate it encounter the structure of that system. The paradoxical intervention changes the relational structure that makes the symptom necessary — rather than fighting the symptom from inside it.
15 Paradoxical Techniques for Clients Who Won’t Cooperate covers fifteen specific techniques with the clinical rationale, design process, and delivery script for each: symptom prescription, prescribing the relapse, therapeutic restraint, the double bind, positive connotation, ordeal therapy, prescribing the resistance, the go-slow, the positioning technique, therapeutic surrender, benevolent sabotage, paradoxical homework, symptom scheduling, and the paradoxical reframe. The final chapter addresses selection and sequencing: how to match a technique to a specific resistance pattern and plan a progression across a treatment.
